Our natural slate can be used for kitchen and bathroom countertops; it is extremely strong and durable. It has a low absorption rate, making it stain-resistant and anti-bacterial. Slate withstands heat from hot pots.

Slate comes in warm shades of gray, green, gold and plum. It is not uncommon for plant fossils to be found on the slate’s surface.

What is Slate and where does it come from

Slate is a metamorphic rock like marble with fine graining formed by low pressures and temperatures. This shale-composed stone is split from the mountain by hand allowing it to separate naturally into uneven sheets giving it its characteristic cleft surface.

Natural cleft slate can become a nuisance when used as a countertop due to its uneven surface. Select a stone with minimal cleft or a smooth honed finish. Because slate countertops are soft, it is important to have the edges rounded.
