  Stone Type   Pros   Cons

GRANITE

Ideal for kitchen countertops, granite is the hardest and most durable of the natural stones. When sealed it resists scratches, heat and acidic substances. Excellent for bathroom vanities.

Granite countertops will stain if exposed to acid-based products. Annual sealing helps retard the absorption of these harmful elements.

POLISHED MARBLE

As a countertop material, marble's smooth, cool surface is ideal for baking and rolling out dough. Offers an upscale and classic appearance for an elegant bathroom.

When used as a countertop surface, marble will scratch. Oils and acids found in everyday substances can stain and etch the surface. Sealing twice a year is necessary and spills need to be wiped up immediately.

SLATE

As a countertop material, slate does not react with acids and resists staining.

Natural cleft slate can become a nuisance when used as a countertop due to its uneven surface. Sealing helps ensure its carefree use.

LIMESTONE

A durable countertop material when selected from the harder and denser stones.

Soft, porous limestone can scratch, stain, and etch more easily than the denser varieties. Sealing will help prevent staining but will not stop problems with etching and scratching.

TRAVERTINE

An appropriate countertop material when selecting from the harder, denser varieties.

Softer, porous varieties can scratch, stain, and etch more easily than the denser varieties. Must seal for stain prevention.

Performance of a stone can vary with different colors or species. Some varieties are more porous than others.

When cleaning a natural stone countertop, use only products made for natural stone. Regular household cleaners can contain harsh chemicals that will strip away your sealer. Warm soapy water is recommended; but after awhile can leave a dull film. Foods containing acids can harm your sealer. Grease and cooking oils can stain porous natural stone.
